Spatial multiplexing in correlated fading via the virtual channel representation

چکیده
Spatial multiplexing techniques send independent data streams on different transmit antennas to maximally exploit the capacity of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) fading channels. Most existing multiplexing techniques are based on an idealized MIMO channel model representing a rich scattering environment. Realistic channels corresponding to scattering clusters exhibit correlated fading and can significantly compromise the performance of such techniques. In this paper, we study the design and performance of spatial multiplexing techniques based on a virtual representation of realistic MIMO fading channels. Since the nonvanishing elements of the virtual channel matrix are uncorrelated, they capture the essential degrees of freedom in the channel and provide a simple characterization of channel statistics. In particular, the pairwise-error probability (PEP) analysis for correlated channels is greatly simplified in the virtual representation. Using the PEP analysis, various precoding schemes are introduced to improve performance in virtual channels. Unitary precoding is proposed to provide robustness to unknown channel statistics. Nonunitary precoding techniques are proposed to exploit channel structure when channel statistics are known at the transmitter. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the attractive performance of the precoding techniques.

Measured Capacities at 5.8 GHz of Indoor MIMO Systems with MIMO Interference
The capacity performances of two interfering flatfading MIMO links are determined based on measured channels. Time-multiplexing of the links (TDMA), that is, when the MIMO links take turns operating without interference, serves as our baseline case. To this, we compare the spatial-multiplexed case (SDMA), which allows both MIMO links to operate simultaneously. Under SDMA, both open-loop (no cha...

An understanding of the interaction between the channel and the signal space is key to reliable communication. Multipath fading channels exhibit inherent diversity that can be exploited via appropriate signaling and reception. Using information about the channel at the transmitter can improve the performance of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) communication systems. When perfect channel state information (CSI) is available, data can be multiplexed and optimized over independent spatial channels. However, when the available channel information is imperfect or partial, crosstalk between the spatial channels is inevitabl...

We show that the sum capacity of “spatially wellcorrelated” Gaussian MIMO broadcast channel (BC) is rather larger than that of the uncorrelated (i.i.d. Rayleigh fading) Gaussian MIMO BC, assuming a special structure of transmit correlation of users. Moreover, a potential sum-rate gap of an ideal correlated Rayleigh fading channel is shown to be M logM over the uncorrelated case, where M is the ...
